Definitely one of the best examples of “let food be thy medicine”

Love it! I have taken to adding garlic at the end of my cooking as a topping to help save some of its benefits. I just sprinkle it onto soups or dishes. Often I add it to cook too in broth making lol I go through a lot do Garlic.

Thank you! As should we all! Though I think according to ayurveda I'm actually supposed to tone it down with the garlic and ginger a bit, boo!

Russian penicillin was a fun fact I learned in this one! I'm ready to go on Jeopardy now.

Haha! Yeah, I think I had heard the phrase before, but didn't know how much science was behind it.

This is so fascinating! I’ve never heard of black garlic before. I’m learning about Tibetan medicine (sowa rigpa) in a very amateurish, second hand way, and garlic is considered (I think) a good medicine for “wind” disorders, like colds…which I’m recovering from now with lots of garlic and ginger and lemon in hot water.

Yeah, I almost bought a rice cooker just to try making black garlic (and might still). And please share more about Tibetan medicine as you learn!

Will do! It’s been fun. And also, I love your Substack! My mom was an MD who was also interested in herbal/plant medicine so this feels like continuing a conversation with her in some ways.

Oh thank you! I love that your mom was into similar stuff and that in a small way I can help foster connection to your ancestors.

Thank you! Also, having the legendary Pimpfucius read my article might be the coolest I have felt since the football team thought my fake nose ring was a real nose ring nigh on 30 years ago :)

Thank you! If you can find any talks by Linda Black Elk, she is an ethnobotanist and everything she says about food as medicine is fascinating. I also appreciate her because she values pleasure and joy in eating, not pushing “clean eating”.

And maybe do a piece on The DOCTRINE OF SIGNATURES.

I'll have to toss that idea around a bit and see where it goes. For now, I discussed it briefly in this article about motherwort and linked to a nice article about the doctrine of signatures in WIRED of all places. https://thenettlewitchmd.substack.com/p/the-magic-and-medicine-of-motherwort As far as I can tell, it works best as a way to remember what a plant can do, rather than a way to predict what a plant can do.

Complete and beautifully done, Amy! I've started to work on two posts for Scorpio in my Growing Green with the Zodiac series--garlic is a Mars/Scorpio herb--and would like to include a link to this post. Thank you in advance!

I subscribed because I want to read your take, I have a lot of Scorpio energy and been feeling more drawn to garlic lately!

Oh, that's so cool, I don't know much about astrology and plants. Though the assertiveness of Mars and garlic definitely makes sense to me. I'd love to learn more! And I'd be honored to have it included.
