This is such good history that you’re sharing and I’m looking forward to reading more about the indigenous framework you’ve mentioned. Have you read Caliban and The Witch by Silvia Federicci? It’s a harrowing read, but discusses how midwives and women were pushed out of herbalism (medicine) when the commons ended in Europe.
Thank you Sarah. I was never too into history as a kid, but now that I have so much curiosity about my ancestors I keep finding really interesting things like the Thirty Years War, which adds so much nuance to how the world got to be as it is. Definitely recommend Sand Talk, though I only read about 1/3 of it before I had to return it to the library. Caribana and the Witch sounds amazing. I'll try to track it down.
Thank you! Thank you! And yes, I think everyone I know has come to terms with the fact the only step left in my full witchery is watching Hocus Pocus and Practical Magic.
Thank you! I had always been taught that the enlightenment kind of sprung up out of nowhere from people wanting to know stuff. This context seems really important to me.

We seriously live too far away from one another.
Thank you! So many roads to further explore here.
Thank you! Yeah, my husband was teasing me that this sounded more like a doctoral dissertation than 2000 words for a weekly newsletter :)
Such a great article. Thank you for surfacing all the missing pieces.
